Organic Acids Test (OAT)
The Organic Acids Test provides a whole-body snapshot of how your systems are functioning.
Rather than looking at isolated markers, OAT reveals how key biological pathways interact, including:
-
Gut–brain connection – how gut health may affect mood and cognitive function
-
Mitochondrial function – how your cells produce energy
-
Nutrient and enzyme activity – which can influence detoxification processes
-
Microbial metabolites – by-products that may contribute to inflammation
The test is simple — just a urine sample — and can highlight areas that may benefit from support, such as:
-
Specific nutrient requirements
-
Microbial imbalances in the gut
-
Detoxification support
-
Mitochondrial (energy) support
Intestinal Permeability Test
Often referred to as assessing “gut barrier integrity,” this test measures how easily molecules pass through the intestinal lining.
The test uses two sugars:
-
Lactulose – a large molecule that normally should not pass through the gut wall
-
Rhamnose – a small molecule that is normally absorbed
A higher lactulose-to-rhamnose ratio can indicate increased intestinal permeability.
This test is particularly helpful if you:
-
Experience unexplained digestive symptoms
-
Are investigating chronic inflammation
-
Are monitoring recovery from gut injury
-
Have conditions known to affect gut permeability (such as coeliac disease or Crohn’s disease)
-
Are assessing the impact of medications such as NSAIDs
As inflammation improves, intestinal permeability often returns to normal, making this test useful for monitoring progress during treatment.
